NEC Group advocates sustainable asset disposal with NCM

3 min read

Leading live events company NEC Group is delivering on its ‘Better Events Strategy’ by promoting more sustainable and ethical disposal of catering, bar equipment, rigging, plant and machinery that is surplus to requirements.

The Group has appointed South Yorkshire based auction and asset management specialists NCM Auctions to consolidate surplus equipment from the NEC Group’s flagship venue, the NEC, Birmingham.

The exclusive online auction features more than 300 lots from across the NEC, including catering equipment and drink dispensers, machinery and access platforms, rigging, event seating, large format printing equipment, furniture, machine parts and much more.

NCM’s unique approach allows this equipment to be redeployed and renewed rather than going to landfill. A sustainable approach that helps drive positive social and economic impact while helping the NEC Group to ensure its work in the events industry is as sustainable as possible, limiting its environmental impact.

Alex McCormick from NCM Auctions explains how important these types of auctions are to smaller businesses:

“When a leader in the events space like NEC Group partners with us to consolidate their assets it makes this equipment and machinery available to smaller businesses, whether they be start-ups, scale-ups, community groups or charities – they all benefit from gaining access to this kit at a fraction of the cost of trying to source or acquire it new.

This circular approach to reusing and redeploying equipment, that is very much in demand, helps divert it from landfill or expensive disposal costs. It’s a win-win situation for our auction buyers and the client.

I want to thank the team at NEC Group for working with us on this project and putting together such an extensive catalogue that has already received significant interest and pre-registration from our regular auction buyers.”

The NEC Group auction is online now, and bidding ends on 29 February.

Original Charlie Chaplin Tramp costume up for auction

3 min read

Charlie Chaplin fans, cinephiles and avid memorabilia collectors are being given a chance to own an iconic Chaplin costume with a fascinating history.

The original Tramp suit that Charlie Chaplin first wore in the part of “The Little Tramp” is one of the stand-out pieces in our latest fine arts, antiques and collectables auction.

Closely identified with the silent film era, Chaplin accidentally created the Tramp character while working on the 1914 short film “Mabel’s Strange Predicament”.

The iconic baggy trousers, tight coat, bowler hat, oversized shoes and cane became such a crucial part of Chaplin’s on-screen persona until Chaplin officially retired the character in the film Modern Times in 1936.

The auction includes the first ever Tramp suit circa 1910, worn in the part of ‘The Little Tramp’.

Lent to Chaplin by Billie Ritchie whilst they were performing in “The Mumming Birds”, Chaplin was supposed to be playing the part of the gentleman cad and Ritchie the Tramp, but the roles were switched.
The shoes were too large, so Chaplin put them on the opposite feet, and Charlie Chaplin’s iconic creation was born.

Chaplin returned the suit after the performances but reprised the character on film in “Kid Auto Races at Venice” (1914), where his Tramp character became famous.

Following Billie Ritchie’s death in a filming accident, Chaplin hired his widow, Winifred, to oversee and design his costumes (most famously for the Great Dictator). When Winifred retired, she came back to Britain with the original Tramp suit that was then placed in the museum of Harry Brown, a stage doorman of many London Theaters between 1930 and 1960.

The suit was later exhibited at the Museum of Moving Images in London, Museum of Entertainment, Truro, Cornwall and Exeter University.

A copy of the book “Chaplin: His Life and Art” which covers the Charlie Chaplin/Billie Ritchie suit saga is also included, along with a Bonhams catalogue 1996 (where the suit was previously sold) and relevant newspaper cuttings.

What an amazing opportunity to own a significant part of Charlie Chaplin and Billie Ritchie film history!

The catalogue for our latest fine arts, antiques and collectables auction is online now and features many more items, including an original Marilyn Monroe swimsuit.

The auction ends on the 1 November from 7pm

Items from former Debenhams store get new lease of life

3 min read

South Yorkshire-based auction and asset management specialists NCM Auctions are breathing new life into assets from the former Debenhams store in Lincoln, creating lots of positive buyer stories along the way.

Debenhams in St Marks Shopping Centre closed its doors for the final time in May 2021 after decades on the High Street. The department store was bought by Boohoo and transitioned to an online-only retailer.

But there can be positives. NCM Auctions are clearing the space for a new retailer to revitalise the high street. At the same time, the local community, charities and businesses all benefit from using their auctions to access high-quality fixtures, furniture, catering equipment, retail displays and much more at a fraction of the cost of sourcing those items new.

NCM’s approach gives all those assets a chance to be redeployed and renewed rather than going to landfill. It’s modern, ethical recycling that helps drive positive social and economic impact.

“Smaller businesses, independent retailers and charities buy from our auctions all the time. Commercial auctions are a vital supply channel for many different organisations.

At every auction, we meet amazing people who come to collect their purchases. That could be former employees or collectors who want pieces of memorabilia. Charities who use our auctions to source furniture and equipment. Other store owners or exciting entrepreneurs who are just starting out or scaling up their businesses.

It’s a brilliant community of people who are all doing their bit to make positive changes. Capturing these stories is one of the best parts of my job!”

Founder and CEO Emma McSkelly

There was a lot of local interest in NCM’s auction for the former Debenhams store. So much so Emma joined Scott Dalton from BBC Radio Lincolnshire on his early morning show to talk about it in more detail and explain the process.

Emma will join Scott on his show again this Friday (13 October) to follow up and share some of the buyer stories live on air.
