Innovative Partnerships: Unlocking Value for Schools and Universities

3 min read

At NCM Auctions, we take pride in helping educational institutions across the UK unlock the hidden value in their surplus assets. From outdated classroom furniture to laboratory equipment and even entire fleets of vehicles, our tailored auction services provide schools and universities with vital funding while promoting sustainability.

Turning Surplus Into Opportunity

When institutions upgrade their facilities or transition to new curriculums, they often face the challenge of managing unused or outdated resources. That’s where NCM Auctions steps in. By turning surplus assets into valuable funds, we enable educational organisations to reinvest in their students and infrastructure.

Every college, school and university has surplus assets be it from a merger, refurbishment, department closure, curriculum change or a build-up in storage over the years. We have been helping colleges and universities clear valuable space, lower clearance fees, hit their sustainability objectives and most importantly – generate unexpected revenue, quickly…for over a decade. The usual range of income generated for education partners is £25,000 to £150,000 per auction.

Take, for example, a recent auction for a well-established engineering college. Facing a significant campus refurbishment, the university partnered with NCM Auctions to sell surplus lathes, pillar drills, milling machines, work benches and much more. The auction attracted a wide audience, including mechanics, start-ups, and community organisations, resulting in a highly successful sale generating nearly £100,000 for the college.

A Win-Win Solution

Our auctions provide a dual benefit:

• Revenue Generation: Schools and universities can maximise the value of surplus assets, providing funds for upgrades, scholarships, or operational needs.

• Community Access: Buyers, ranging from local schools to charities, can acquire high-quality equipment and furniture at affordable prices.

Sustainability in Education

By giving these assets a second life, NCM Auctions helps institutions contribute to a circular economy. Instead of discarding usable resources, we connect them with buyers who can put them to good use—reducing waste and environmental impact.

Case Study: Newton Rigg College

One notable example of our work is the project with Newton Rigg College in Penrith. Following the announcement of the college’s closure in 2020, NCM Auctions undertook a comprehensive site clearance. This included multiple departments and a wide range of assets, such as farming and agricultural equipment, engineering machinery, commercial vehicles, ground care tools, and general college equipment.

Results Achieved:

• Financial Success: The auction raised over £300,000, with more than 850 items sold, primarily within the local community.

• Sustainability: By facilitating the reuse of equipment, we significantly reduced landfill waste, aligning with environmental objectives.

• Community Impact: The auction supported local SMEs and charities, providing them with access to quality equipment at affordable prices.

Building Stronger Partnerships

Our process is simple and transparent, from initial consultation to the final sale. We manage everything, including cataloguing, marketing, and collection of goods, ensuring a seamless experience for our clients. With a growing network of motivated buyers, our auctions consistently deliver strong results.

Ready to Unlock Value?

If your school, college, or university is looking to repurpose surplus assets, then begin your consignment today. Together, we can turn unused resources into opportunities for growth and innovation.

Secrets to Success: Enhancing Your Assets for a Winning Auction Sale

Secrets to Success: Enhancing Your Assets for a Winning Auction Sale

3 min read

Selling assets at auction is a fantastic way to attract competitive bids, but maximising value requires preparation. With the right presentation, compelling storytelling, and strategic targeting, you can turn bidders into buyers and secure top returns. Here’s how to add value to your auction items and achieve the best results.

1. Improve Presentation and Aesthetics

• Detailed Cleaning and Repairs: Whether it’s a piece of furniture, a car, or artwork, a thorough cleaning or minor repairs can enhance the appeal. For collectibles, consult with professionals on the best restoration practices.

• High-Quality Photography: Clear, high-resolution images from multiple angles can significantly boost interest. Include close-ups of unique details, textures, or signatures that highlight its value.

• Appealing Staging: Present the asset in an environment that shows it at its best. For example, photograph artwork on a neutral wall or furniture in a stylish room setting to help potential buyers envision the item in their own space.

Below is an example of what we wouldn’t recommend as the first lot image, as compared to what we would put as the assets first image within the catalogue.

2. Detailed Provenance and Documentation

• Ownership and Historical Documentation: For items like antiques, art, or luxury goods, proof of provenance can add significant value. Documentation of previous owners, notable history, or authenticity certificates is highly desirable.

3.Authenticity Verification and Transparency

• Clear Provenance or Certification: Potential buyers may feel hesitant without clear authenticity. For assets like art, collectibles, or even tech items, providing certifications or warranties can be a big selling point.

• Transparency About Defects: Address any imperfections openly, showing photos and descriptions to ensure buyers know exactly what they’re purchasing. Honesty builds trust, and transparency about even small flaws can help avoid disputes and encourage bidding.

4. Effective Storytelling

• Unique Story: If your asset has a compelling backstory or connection to a historic event, emphasize it. Even something as simple as how you acquired it can create emotional appeal and differentiate your item from similar listings.

• Highlight Unique Features: Point out any unique features, limited editions, or rare design elements. Limited availability often increases demand and value.

Enhancing your assets for auction is all about attention to detail, from presentation to engaging buyers with authenticity and a compelling story. By following these strategies, you can attract higher bids, maximise value, and enjoy a successful auction outcome.

Partnering with NCM Auctions, Samways Fish Merchants are opting for a circular and sustainable approach to extend the lifecycle of vehicles, machinery and fixtures that are surplus to requirements.

Last weeks triumphant two-day, live auction

3 min read

Last week, NCM orchestrated yet another glorious live auction on behalf of the esteemed Maybourne, showcasing the elegant surplus collection of its renowned hotels—Claridge’s, The Connaught, and The Berkeley. This prestigious event captivated an international audience, drawing hundreds of discerning bidders from across the globe, resulting in a dynamic, fast-paced auction that unfolded over two exhilarating days.

The auction offered a carefully curated selection of bespoke creations, each commissioned exclusively for these illustrious establishments by world-renowned designers. Among the exceptional pieces of high-end furniture, lighting, and artwork were masterpieces by Ben Whistler, David Linley, Paola Lenti, John Wigmore, EPOCA, and Rosenthal Junto—just a glimpse into the array of illustrious names that graced the collection.

Auction Highlights

A pair of custom-designed Ben Whistler chairs, commissioned by Robert Angell Design International (RADI) for The Berkeley’s iconic Blue Bar, garnered significant attention. RADI’s redesign of the Blue Bar masterfully preserves the essence of the original David Collins-designed space, retaining signature elements while seamlessly introducing new bespoke furniture by Ben Whistler. These one-of-a-kind pieces achieved a hammer price of £1,100—an exceptional acquisition for such a rare and meticulously crafted creation.

Another standout piece, a coveted Editions Serge Mouille floor lamp, typically retailing between £4,500 and £6,500, went under the hammer for just £900—a remarkable triumph for the winning bidder, an expert within the interior design world.

The auction attracted a prestigious clientele, including luxury hotel proprietors, elite interior designers, seasoned antiques dealers, and previous distinguished guests of Maybourne’s properties. Beyond the exhilarating energy of the event, the auction’s broader impact was evident. By offering surplus assets to the public through an auction rather than discarding them, Maybourne supported local businesses and contributed to the sustainability movement, underscoring their commitment to environmental responsibility.

Sustainable Practices

In collaborating with NCM Auctions to responsibly manage their redundant assets, Maybourne not only enhances their brand’s credibility but also solidifies their position as a forward-thinking, sustainable luxury leader. Embracing sustainable practices in such a public and impactful manner fosters greater trust, appeal, and respect in the eyes of discerning consumers, further elevating the brand’s esteemed reputation in an increasingly eco-conscious marketplace.
