Blog by Paul Esson

Back with the brilliant NCM Auctions team

I’ve recently re-joined the brilliant team at NCM Auctions as a sales and marketing consultant after a few months away and couldn’t be more excited about the work that Emma and Andy have asked me to crack on with. It’s even more exciting after seeing the new office space! Check it out below…those that know Emma and Andy will know this was predominantly Emma’s handy work! (on a 100%/0% split)

Learning from my contacts

I spent 6 fun months working with the NCM Auctions team from summer till Christmas 2020 before recently returning in July 2021. During this gap I caught up with a lot of friends and professional contacts who were interested in understanding exactly what NCM Auctions does. I say exactly, because they had a fair idea on how normal auctions work, but needed a bit more explanation about how NCM Auctions run online auctions for our clients. Here’s an explainer video we put together in late 2020 to give people a good overview of our auction business for those that are new to NCM Auctions.

What’s the plan for the coming months?

We are going to try some new content in addition to the brilliant work the team do on a day-to-day basis.

1. Videos

It’s time to start sharing more video of what we do. I’ll be visiting our client venues to film:

– the assets and equipment we sell via online auction

– the valuation and lotting process

– how the live online auctions work from the office

– the collection days live from site

This will show our potential customers exactly how our auction process works from start to finish. We take care of the entire process, but there’s so much to discuss about an auction that it can sometimes sound overwhelming. It really isn’t though. So a nice little video will be a great tool to explain the timeline and tasks of what happens with an NCM Auction, all led by our auction experts.

2. Vlogging

We’ve got a great team at NCM, the big cheeses (cheeses?) Emma and Andy recruit great people with great personalities, so I think these great people should be on camera for a bit of vlog action to keep people updated with what we’re doing.

The lovely team ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE with this new concept and have told me there’s no chance they’ll be appearing on camera, but I’ll warm them up eventually!

So once my shiny new NCM uniform arrives I’ll be doing some short updates from behind the scenes to show what we get up to on a weekly basis in the online auction industry.

3. Client Testimonials

The absolute best people to tell our future customers about how easy, sustainable and financially rewarding our online auctions are is our previous clients. So from next week I’ll be visiting some previous clients to record some short interviews on camera.

Time to get to work!

That’s more than enough to be getting on with…but if there’s any information, videos, vlogs or anything at all you’d like to better understand our NCM Auctions service please do drop me an email on paul@ncmauctions.co.uk

Scaling up, NCM Auctions moves to new premises

3 min read

The Doncaster-based auction house has recently relocated to new premises at Kestrel Court near Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Following a rapid period of growth and recently recognised as one of the fastest-growing companies in Europe – ranked number 336 in the Financial Times 1000 – the ambitious move is a crucial next step for the fast-moving, forward-thinking auction company.

The 13,500 sq ft unit includes warehousing and storage space alongside a purpose-built office area. The team are now working from a stylish and inspiring open-plan workspace that contains flexible breakout areas, meeting and video conferencing rooms, media suite and a company gym.

A blank canvas, the empty unit before building work started

The warehousing space

Leading by example the auctioneer used the new space to showcase just what can be done – with nearly all the warehouse racking, storage, furniture, soft furnishings, screens, IT equipment, seating and display pieces sourced from commercial asset auctions up and down the country, or by upcycling and repurposing their own surplus items.

Founder and CEO Emma McSkelly explained the reasoning behind the move:

“As a company, we’ve seen rapid growth – nine years ago it was a two-person team working around my kitchen table. Now we’re looking for a head office that can accommodate twenty plus employees. At the same time, this space needs to provide short and long term storage for a vast range of auction lots, allow the team to manage on-site collections and offer the versatility to undertake live, online and hybrid auctions. That’s no small ask for any space, and after lots of searching, it became clear the only way to get something that worked for us was to build it ourselves.”

“Thankfully the new Kestrel Court development near the airport provided the answer and gave us the space we needed to create our new home. For the first time, we have our sales, operations, and warehousing teams working from a single location and under one roof. That is a huge operational advantage for both our clients and us.”

Emma McSkelly, Founder and CEO

Office space and meeting rooms

Executive director Andy Smith, expanded on how and why getting the space right was so important:

“The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how everyone works. Working from home has been the norm, but for us, the culture and dynamic when we’re all together are so important to how we work.”

“We needed a space that could inspire and motivate our team and allow them to do their best work. From the living moss walls to the wall art and beautiful designer furniture, we’ve built something that’s the right cultural fit for NCM. This new space doesn’t just inspire our team. It helps us to attract some of the biggest and brightest talents working in this field.”

“Now we’re up and running in the new space the team is growing again with a number of exciting job openings across the business.”

NCM Auctions appointed as official auctioneer for Leicester City Council

3 min read

NCM Auctions are pleased to announce they’ve been appointed as the official auctioneers for Leicester City Council following a highly competitive pitch process against multiple auction houses.

Leicester City Council is the unitary authority responsible for local government in the city. Leicester City Council members determine many of the day-to-day decisions around the services and funding that affect people’s lives, including schools, roads, and council tax.

After discussing the Council’s aims and objectives in detail, NCM was awarded the project based on their professionalism and public sector experience, end-to-end managed service and the team’s effectiveness, sustainable and ethical approach.

Following the closure of the Council Housing Services Workshop, the exclusive auction includes a wide range of engineering and woodworking machinery, workshop equipment, stock, parts and fixtures and fittings.

The new appointment further strengthens NCM’s position as a leading auction house and long-term partner for many public sector organisations looking for a more ethical, sustainable and proven method for delivering the maximum revenue return for surplus equipment and materials.

The team are thrilled to be selected and looking forward to working with Leicester City Council, as Dave Byron, NCM’s Sales Director explains…

“It’s a huge honour to be recognised by Leicester City Council and a testament to the professionalism and expertise of our skilled team here at NCM Auctions. We’re thrilled to host this exclusive auction and very much look forward to progressing our relationship as Leicester City Council’s auction partner.”

Dave Byron, Sales Director at NCM

The catalogue is now online, with the auction ending on 17 June 2021.

Andy is going to be on Channel 4s The Circle

3 min read

Yes, the secret is finally out. Our very own executive director, the social media maestro and all-round top bloke, Andy Smith, will be gracing your TV screens tonight as one of the nine new contestants in The Circle on Channel 4.

The game show sees the group of strangers move into a stylish apartment block in Salford. Once there, they can only communicate via a voice-activated app. They never see each other face-to-face, so each player can choose how they present themselves – choosing to be whoever they want to be (Andy is playing as himself, by the way).

Competing for likes over the new few weeks, they only get to meet another contestant in the flesh if, or when they get ‘blocked’ out of the game.

Season 3 of the Circle kicks off tonight at 9:15pm and is available to stream on All 4.

Best of luck Andy from all the team at NCM… go get them Catfish!

Growing strong: NCM Auctions is one of the fastest-growing companies in Europe

3 min read

The Yorkshire auction house helps organisations solve the problem of what to do with surplus business and commercial assets. Now the Doncaster-based auctioneer has landed a coveted place on the FT 1000 at number 366.

The annual list published by the Financial Times ranks the top 1,000 companies in Europe by revenue growth, with NCM Auctions the only commercial auction house.

It’s remarkable growth for a business founded in 2012 with just two employees, one laptop and a shared mobile. Their approach was unique, saving clients significant costs and returning unexpected revenue all while delivering a responsible and sustainable disposal channel. It worked and quickly secured contracts from a variety of public and private sector companies. Rapid growth followed with the company successfully doubling revenue year-on-year to date. Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, NCM is still on track to deliver record growth and has doubled staff numbers over the last 12 months.

NCM work with all types of organisations, from local SMEs to national and international brands, helping them dispose or surplus industrial and commercial assets. From the entire contents of large manufacturing plants and supermarkets to luxury hotels, arenas, and more recently, the contents of a former Weetabix factory. Their hybrid approach of auctioneers and marketing experts matches the right buyers with the right assets, achieving maximum revenue returns.

With the ambition to challenge what a commercial auction house could be, founder and CEO Emma McSkelly is the driving force behind their disruptive approach:

“We certainly aren’t auctioneers in the traditional sense, far from it. Our offering is unique. We bring our clients more, delivering the highest revenue return for their surplus assets. While at the same time helping them ‘do good’ for the environment, local communities, small start-ups, charities and buyers all around the world. Working with us means these companies can be ethically and environmentally responsible with their approach to disposing of assets without additional costs or impact on their operations.”

Executive director, Andy Smith added:

“It’s an honour ranking in the FT 1000. To be in the top 500 is an achievement we’re incredibly proud of and fantastic recognition for our brilliant team, partners, and clients.”

VIEW OUR LATEST GYM EQUIPMENT AUCTIONS

NCM Auctions have recently completed the second phase of our auction sales on behalf of Bolton Council and Bolton Leisure Trust.

The project involved the entire contents of four gyms for the local authority due for refurbishment.

The online auction included professional Lifecycle and Lifefitness gym equipment – cycling machine, cross trainers, treadmills, step machines and much more.

While we delayed the final auction due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it successfully went ahead in February when our team could safely carry out on-site collections.

The auction had a high level of interest across our online platforms, and we delivered maximum revenue returns for our clients.

Given the current situation, we’re seeing high demand for gym and fitness equipment as people are looking to take the first steps to create a home gym or upgrading from consumer-grade fitness equipment.

Buying from an auction is an excellent way to acquire high-quality gym equipment without breaking the bank.

If you have gym and fitness equipment that is surplus to requirements, speak to our expert team.
